Stephen Oakes is a solicitor, with a background in commercial law, who has practiced mainly in the West Yorkshire area. He has been a key figure in supporting the business community through long standing involvement with Business Link, the Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Institute of Directors.
Educated locally and in Shropshire, he is a law graduate of the University of Leeds. Always an active figure in professional and business life he was President of Dewsbury District Law Society in 1992/93. He has been Chairman of Family Property Company - Wilson Briggs and Sons Ltd of Ossett between 1988 to date.
From 1984-2008 he was Senior Partner at Chadwick Lawrence Solicitors retiring from this leading regional practice to become a Consultant Solicitor in 2009 to date.
He has always been a vigorous and passionate advocate for the business community promoting and helping it to play a more prominent leadership role in the local community and regeneration of the area; a role he continues in the Wakefield Enterprise Partnership. Previously he has been President of the Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry Ltd from 1992-1993, and chaired Business Link (West Yorkshire) Ltd from 2005-2008.
He has a passion for music particularly choral performance and he has served as Chairman of Halifax Choral Society (1817) Ltd.
Married to Jane since 1974, he has two children (Rachel and Anthony) now also married. He is a keen golfer and an active participant in his local church St Matthews Church of England Lightcliffe, Halifax.
