LEP Skills Service
The skills service has supported over 4,500 individuals and provided funding for over 3,000 training courses by committing £2.7 million to train the workforce of Leeds City Region. Additionally, the LEP’s team of Skills Advisors are currently working with 800 new employers to ensure they benefit from the support and funding available.
An initial evaluation of the skills service has highlighted a positive impact!
In particular, we have seen industry recognised and accredited training have a hugely positive impact on business growth. Funding support from the LEP has resulted in individuals having recognised, formal accreditations including:
- Institute of Leadership and Management,
- CAD training,
- Institute of Directors
- Chartered Institute of Marketing
- NVQs in Customer Service, Plant Operations and Business Administration
As the programme continues, there will be an increased focus on both accredited and industry certified training and on supporting SMEs to create and implement longer-term training plans in order to facilitate business growth. In particular, when discussing training plans and needs with employers, we encourage them to consider:
How training would link to their business goals, both long and short term
Benefits they would expect to see through any planned training
Current issues or needs within the company and how these could be addressed by upskilling staff
The LEP’s employment and skills plan was launched on the 30th June, the plan lays out the LEP’s vision to be a globally recognised economy where good growth delivers high levels of prosperity, jobs and quality of life for everyone. It highlights how the skills service, as well as increasing skill levels and employability is key to delivering the LEP’s Strategic Economic Plan (SEP). See the full strategy here
Key skills shortages in sectors including manufacturing, construction, digital & creative, hospitality and medical technology will be addressed to assist in the promotion of economic and employment growth.
Businesses in the region can apply for support grants of £500 to £50,000.
