04 March 2020

An equity release specialist, an award-winning exporter and a burger and sausage maker are among a host of well-known names that feature in the 2020 edition of the Yorkshire SME 300 table.

The Insider SME 300 is created by measuring the performance of companies through a combination of turnover and profitability from their latest accounts filed at Companies House.

The full list for 2020 can be found in the latest edition of the Yorkshire Business Insider.

Topping the 2020 list is Leeds-based equity release product provider Pure Retirement, founded by entrepreneur Andrew Thirkill in 2013.

Last year, the business secured a long-term agreement to provide lifetime mortgage origination and servicing for Nationwide Building Society. Together sister company Age Partnership Group, it previously supported Nationwide on its entry into the equity release market in 2017.

Just outside the top ten is Wakefield-headquartered manufacturer OE Electrics manufactures soft-wiring for office, education and hospitality environments.

The company won the Export Award at Yorkshire Business Insider's Growth 100 Awards 2019. Last month (February 2020), it launched a new North American business and now supplies its products to more than 60 countries.

North Yorkshire sausage and burger company maker Heck Foods makes the 2020 list.

The company has invested £1.5m in new machinery to help meet demand for its vegan and chicken sausages and burgers, and launched four new vegan ranges into the UK high street in January. It is also planning to develop a vertical farm with the aim of creating a 'Silicon Valley of Food in the Vale of York'.

Also featuring is Witt & Son, which specialises in smoke extract and tunnel fan units, supply customers worldwide from its manufacturing facility in Shelf, Halifax.

Managing director Martin Booth told Insider: "Like most specialist manufacturing companies we took a beating about six months before the first Brexit date. Visibility on the engineering side suddenly dropped from around two-and-a-half years to three months. We were planning for doom and gloom but suddenly the orders started coming back again.

"Last year we won the biggest order in our history for Hinkley Point (nuclear power station). That will keep us busy for four years."
