Government has released the first £5.4m of a £23.9m Towns Fund allocation for Castleford.

Year 1 funding, received in September, and which government requires to be spent by 31 March 2023, is being used for the purchase of properties on the waterfront and in town to enable the delivery of regeneration plans.

Some of the funding will also pay for detailed design work for the projects while more is going towards shop improvement grants for businesses on Sagar Street.

The £23.9m grant, to be disbursed in stages over the next four years, is to deliver the following four key projects, designed to help realise the vision of rediscovering Castleford as a distinctive riverside market town:

Castleford Riverside – making the most of the river through new greenspaces, an improved Queens Mill and a revitalised Ship Inn

Castleford Boho – ensuring Sagar Street is a safe, inviting link between the river and the town centre through public realm improvements, a new Hub for Skills and Work, a refurbished Kingdom Hall which will act as a community centre, and our ongoing shop improvement grant scheme.

Heart of Castleford – making Henry Moore Square the beating heart of the town by creating a much larger public open space and introducing a new mixed-use community and events building.

Castleford Connections – helping residents and visitors get around town through new signage and seating, while also improving key routes through the introduction of greenery.
