Refurbishment of Pontefract Market Hall to start in March

23 January 2023

Works to refurbish Pontefract Market Hall are scheduled to begin at the end of March 2023.

Works will be carried out to the interior as well as works both the Salter Row and Cornmarket entrances.

The interior of the market will receive upgrades including a replacement floor, new fascias and shutters for stalls, general wall and frame decoration as well as new lighting.

Works on the Grade II listed façade, built in 1859-60 to the design of Joseph Wilson, include new entrance doors, decorating the timber shutters, repairing handrails and stone, cleaning the masonry and adding lighting to showcase the building.

New lighting and signage will also be installed at the rear Salter Row entrance to make it more welcoming.

The project, part of a wider £4.8 capital investment into Markets, is expected to be complete by the end of September 2023.
