Monkhill station ‘beacon’ for the disabled coming

23 January 2023

Detailed designs of what an accessible Monkhill railway station in Pontefract will look like are expected next month.

Architects are working on the new ‘Beacon’ footbridge design to make the station compliant with government’s ‘Access for All’ programme which is part-funding this project.

That programme addresses the issues faced by disabled passengers and passengers facing mobility restraints (such as heavy luggage or pushchairs) when using railway stations in Great Britain by creating an obstacle free, accessible route from the station entrance to the platform.

Construction on the bridge is scheduled to begin in August 2023 and be completed by December 2023.

A partnership between Northern Trains Limited and Vextrix Consulting Services is implementing the project.
