Friarwood Valley Gardens receives a colourful new update

05 June 2023

Friarwood Valley Gardens in Pontefract has received a striking artistic update in the form of a brand-new mural, thanks to the friends of Locklan Barratt.

Funded by a grant from the Community Development Fund, and after consultation with The Friends of Friarwood Valley Gardens, space was provided for the young people to creatively express their feelings following the loss of their friend.

Cllr Lorna Malkin who first suggested the project to Wakefield Council was delighted to see the new mural in place. “It’s great to see the project come to fruition. I am really pleased we were able to find a unique way for Locklan’s friends to express their feelings and remember him in such a positive way.”

When Wakefield Council approached local artist Rachel List to ask if she would like to get involved she was thrilled to take part. Rachel is a professional mural artist and has created a lot of well received street art. “When I was approached about the project I wanted to be involved as I feel it’s important to give young people a voice. The mural we have created has helped to do this and ensures the memory of Locklan is preserved in art form in a way that respects and celebrates his life.”

The mural can be seen at Friarwood Valley Gardens in Pontefract now.
