A new international food store has opened in Featherstone.

Dotcos Global Market – an African-Caribbean and international food and cosmetics store – opened on Station Lane last week.

It has been set up by husband and wife Collins Aboagye and Doris Oppong-Aboagye, after they realised that local people were travelling to Leeds and Wakefield to buy international food.

Collins said: “We saw a gap in the market when we did our research.

“We realised that most people were travelling to Leeds and Wakefield to get their international food.”

After running their store from home in Pontefract for around a year, the pair decided to bring the international products to “Featherstone’s doorstep,” and set up the Station Lane store.

Collins said the community response since opening has been “absolutely incredible,” adding they have had customers from Pontefract, Castleford and Normanton, and plan to open one store in each of the Five Towns over the next few years.

So far, popular products have included jerk chicken seasoning and plantain chips, and the store is also happy to take requests for products customers would like to see.

“The local community [is] yearning to try something new,” Collins added.

He added that the store has been built “by the community, for the community,” and invites people to “just come in and say hello.”

Dotcos Global Market can be found at 56, Station Lane, Featherstone, Wakefield, WF7 5BB.

It is open Tuesday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm, and Sunday, 1pm to 6pm.
