Extra funding for Yorkshire company will supply hundreds more electric buses
Wakefield-based Pelican Engineering has secured additional funding from HSBC UK to increase the supply of electric buses and coaches across the UK.
The family-owned business will supply an extra 780 battery electric vehicles from Zhengzhou Yutong Bus for UK operators in the coming year – providing a significant boost in the number of zero emission buses in operation across the UK.

It is estimated that when in operation, the 780 zero emission vehicles will save an estimated 35,880 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually from British transport.
The acquisition is supported by an eight-figure increase to an existing HSBC UK green trade facility at the business.
The additional funding positions Pelican Engineering as one of the largest zero emission bus suppliers in the UK.
Pelican-supplied Yutong buses currently service routes in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness, Edinburgh, Carmarthen, Cardiff, Bristol, Basildon, Doncaster, Leicester, Newport, Leeds, Chesterfield, Stockton and Newcastle.
Richard Crump, managing director at Pelican Bus and Coach, said: “Not only is this a very significant step for our business, but also for the decarbonisation of UK bus and coach fleets.
“In recent years, we’ve seen continuous growth in demand for electric vehicles, as more operators have invested in depot charging capabilities and made long-term strategic commitments to replace diesel buses supported by ambitious government funding.
“To harness this momentum and support this transition throughout the sector, we need dependable and reliable vehicles that deliver best in class performance and consumption at a competitive price.
“This is why we feel our partnership with Yutong is so important for the future of UK transport.
“Having just renewed our exclusive long term distribution agreement with Yutong, we look forward to getting more zero emissions vehicles on UK roads.
“I am also hugely grateful for HSBC UK’s continued confidence and support for our business.”
Jamie McCullough, corporate relationship director at HSBC UK, added: “The UK bus and coach sector is a genuine success story we should be celebrating.
“The industry is an example of Britain being a standout international leader, with operators adopting zero emissions that reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality in our towns and cities.
“Pelican has played a big part in the transition of this sector so it’s fantastic to extend our support for the business, as it continues to play a significant role in decarbonising the future of UK travel.”
This latest order of vehicles to be imported by Pelican Engineering with HSBC UK funding includes fully electric single deck E10 and E12 buses, over 100 GTe14 long range electric intercity coaches, 123 electric U11DD double deckers and electric wide body airside buses.
Pelican Engineering Co Ltd was established in 1919 and has traded continuously since then. It is currently managed by the grandson of its founder and employs 220 people.
