‘High-quality’ Aldi store set to open at Wakefield’s Cathedral Retail Park
Plans have been approved to build a “high quality and modern” Aldi supermarket at Wakefield’s Cathedral Retail Park.
Wakefield Council has approved the construction of the new store at the site of vacant premises previously occupied by Argos, Brantano, Carpetright and Office Outlet.
The scheme involves demolishing one of the units to create more car parking and merging and refurbishing two others to create the new supermarket.
A report said that the number of customer parking spaces will increase from 132 to 161 when the work is completed.
A planning statement submitted on behalf of Aldi said: “Aldi Stores and its discount operation is an established and widely recognised brand in the UK.
“However, to address the dynamic nature of retailing and changing expectations of customers, the company continually reviews its property portfolio and store operational requirements.
“In line with this approach, Aldi continues to develop its stores with a proposed design for a new Wakefield store that includes the very latest design features, resulting in a high-quality, modern facility for the area.”
The document added: “Access to the site will remain largely unchanged and the proposed development will improve access for customers.
“The proposal will bring vacant floorspace back into economically productive use.”
A council planing officer’s report said the proposal was “acceptable in retail policy terms.”
They added: “The proposal is not expected to undermine the vitality or viability of Wakefield city centre or its smaller independent retailers
“The development cannot be accommodated within any available or suitable site in Wakefield city centre and does not threaten existing, committed, or planned investment in defined centres.”
Last months, Aldi confirmed plans to open a store the District Centre which is due to be built to the north of the city centre at City Fields.
Aldi currently operates 1,052 stores across the UK and employs in the region of 45,000 staff, making it one of the largest supermarkets in the country.
