Maker of the Month: Charlie Davis

10 Jun 2025

For the month of June, our Maker of the Month is Charlie Davis, digital illustrator and founder of the creative studio Seb & Charlie Design. From her base in Wakefield, she creates brilliant designs focusing on playfulness and nostalgia.

She set up her business in 2015 during her maternity leave, and what began as a hobby flourished into a thriving local studio.

We reached out to Charlie as we wanted to know more about the origins of her business, their love from Wakefield's creative community and much more.

Maker of the Month

"My name is Charlie Davis and I’m the founder of Seb & Charlie Design, a small UK-based creative studio specialising in creating nostalgic and playful designs. I am a digital illustrator based in Wakefield and set up Seb & Charlie Design in 2015 whilst on maternity leave with my eldest child. The business began as a little hobby, designing and making wedding stationary and personalised prints which I sold on an Etsy shop. After a few months I was receiving lots of business which meant I could set up on a permanent basis and move into self employment."

"I'm a mother to two children and passionate about the power of play and creativity. My designs are unique and joyful and each day is completely different to the next. One day I can be producing a children's activity sheet for a restaurant and the next I can be designing a large wall installation for a school."

"My clients include a wide range of businesses including John Lewis, Tigerplay, Wakefield Council and The Happy News."

"I grew up in Ossett in the late 80's/early 90's and spent many hours playing outdoors and being creative, making dolls house from old shoe boxes, reading Roald Dahl books repeatedly, writing stories and thinking up characters to draw. After university i moved to Leicester to work for an advertising agency however after a few years I realised I wanted to be back home and close to my friends and family again. I returned to Ossett and have now lived here for many years. My work is influenced by childhood, education and play and I love how creative Wakefield is and how many opportunities there are to be part of a vibrant community while raising a family."

"I loved working on a branding project for a new play café for Tigerplay because it allowed me to work on my creativity, apply my own unique style to the project and fully immerse myself in the world of play."

"I also loved producing wall installations for Southdale C of E School in Ossett and Healey Junior, Infant and Nursery school in Batley. The projects were designed to inform students on subjects such as climate change, staying healthy and active and educating children about the local area. It makes me so proud to produce designs which children enjoy looking at, engaging with and learning from in such a playful and fun way."

"The business has been running for nearly 10 years this year so i feel very fortunate and proud of my hard work and high level of returning clients. In terms of what is next for Seb & Charlie Design, I want to continue to grow my client base, ideally working with more organisations linked to play, education and nature. I'm currently working with University of Cambridge Museums and their 'Summer at the Museums' campaign, which is a project to encourage more families to visit the museums across the Cambridge area - I can't wait to share!"
