NHS Health Checks at Your Workplace: Employer Benefits & Expectations

02 Feb 2026

Hosting NHS Health Checks at work helps identify risks like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and dementia early, giving staff the chance to take action before problems develop. Healthier employees are more productive, have better attendance, and feel valued by their employer.

Reduce sickness absence: Early detection and intervention can lead to lower rates of sickness absence and reduced long-term health complications among your workforce.

NHS Health Check

Conexus Healthcare CIC, represent all GP practices in Wakefield, they are commissioned by Wakefield Council to deliver Free NHS Health Checks in workplaces to support employee health and wellbeing until March 2026.

Support organisational wellbeing goals: Supporting employees’ health shows commitment to wellbeing, helps meet corporate social responsibility targets, and can enhance your reputation as a caring employer.

Remove barriers to access: Many staff may struggle to attend health checks at their GP due to work commitments. Onsite checks make it easy and convenient to access care, especially for those in shift patterns or manual roles.

We also know that men are, on average, 15% less likely than women to visit their GP (data from NHS Digital). Increasing access opportunities is one way that we can start to address these issues.

Completely free and confidential
The programme is fully funded, and all NHS Health Checks are delivered confidentially by experienced staff. Results are shared with employees and (if agreed) with their GP. As an employer, you will need to facilitate your employees taking a short time away from their duties but you will not receive any details of who has attended a healthcheck or the outcome of the appointment.

What is expected of employers

For your employee Health Checks to run successfully, the following is recommended:

  • Provide a suitable, confidential space

    • Offer a private, accessible, and safe room for checks, such as a meeting room or large, clear office where staff feel comfortable and confident in their privacy.

  • Hospitality for Health Check staff

    • Ensure GP Care Wakefield staff have access to WiFi, refreshments, toilets, and are given a short orientation (where these facilities are, emergency procedures, etc.) on arrival.

  • Help promote the Health Checks

    • Display posters and digital assets, share template emails/newsletters, and encourage team leaders to promote the opportunity to staff. Use the supplied QR code and booking links to enable easy sign-up.

    • We have included some text that you may want to include in your employee newsletters or your corporate intranet.

  • Save the date

    • Agree dates for your workplace health check, identify a staff contact to support logistics, and welcome the health check team on the day.

  • Participation is voluntary

    • Emphasise to staff that attending is voluntary and confidential, and reassure them about the privacy of their health information.

  • Support evaluation

    • Collect business and staff feedback about the day to help improve future workplace health check programmes. GP Care will be evaluating the project and it would be great to have employer and employee feedback and case studies as part of this. All Health Check attendees are sent follow up text from GP Care. This is a standard process in place for all Health Check appointments, not just those based in the workplace.
