Business Model Canvas Workshop

Not every business needs a full business plan, but every business can benefit from a Business Model Canvas to help them better understand their business and market to make the most effective business choices. The visual chart of the business model canvas helps bring together key elements of your business ideas to create a greater understanding and confidence to your business model.

This workshop will be delivered by Brenda Etchells from Carduus Ltd. Brenda is an experienced MBA professional, her background spans three decades and many disciplines, including marketing, product development, business intelligence, corporate planning and all aspects of the strategic planning process.

Overview:

The Business Model Canvas is a really simple but versatile planning tool that breaks down your business into nine building blocks and helps you to articulate:

• WHY your business exists and the value you deliver to your clients

• WHO those clients are

• HOW their needs are met

• WHAT activities need to take place to meet these needs

• The resulting key drivers of revenue and costs to ensure VIABILITY

Once you have mapped your business model you can use this to aid the strategic growth and decision making in a variety of ways.

In this workshop you will

1. Be introduced to the canvas and the nine blocks

2. Have a go at modelling your own business onto the canvas

3. Start to think about how you can use it to help grow your business

Here is a bit about Brenda and why she enjoys delivering AD:VENTURE workshops!

I left a 30-year career in financial services to follow my dream.  And that dream was to help other business owners by offering support and sharing my knowledge, providing small business owners with the tools to find success.

During my career I have had the benefit of working across many disciplines including marketing, product development, research and planning and also working with people at all levels in an organisation.  This has given me a well-rounded view of the business world.

Whilst my background is in the corporate world, the skills, tools and techniques I’ve picked up over the years are transferable to any business, of any size, in any industry. Also, having gone through the process myself of starting up and running a business, I can put myself firmly in the shoes of start-up businesses.

I understand the best way to share knowledge is not to overcomplicate anything and that is why I make sure the workshops I run for AD:VENTURE are simple, straightforward and fun.  It is exciting and inspirational hearing all the different business ideas form the delegates – and I am sure I learn just as much from the delegates as they do from me – it is about sharing knowledge and experiences.

When I am not delivering workshops I am a Business Mentor, guiding and helping small business owners and start-ups, acting as a sounding board and an appropriate level of challenge.   I am a member of the Association of Business Mentors and have just started my ILM7 qualification in Executive Coaching and Mentoring as it is important to me to keep learning and growing at my trade.

I do what I do because I love people and being warm and open helps to foster strong bonds with my clients and being a supportive listener means I can often pick up on things before they do. Understanding and thriving off people is what drives me to want to help other’s to shape their business.

I established my company, Carduus Ltd, in 2019 where I work with larger businesses and offer strategic planning consultancy services and  facilitation of strategy away-days.   What I learn from working with these larger clients I can translate into how I help other smaller businesses.

P.S.  If you are curious Carduus is Latin for Thistle, which represents my Scottish heritage.

I have lived in Yorkshire for almost half my life – but the Scottish accent is still strong.   I have two (adult) children, a cat and a dog. Running my own business gives me the time to balance work and family commitments and to fit in my fitness obsession.   I also attend Musical Theatre classes and whilst I am no singer it is a fantastic release from the stresses of life to belt out a good tune.
