The Changing Face of Sagar Street

27 July 2023

One of the things that makes Castleford so special is the people who live, work and visit here. The town has long been known for its markets and traditional independent retailers, you can find an array of independent stores and small businesses throughout the town. Wakefield Council is committed to supporting local businesses, as well as bringing large scale investment into Castleford.

The Council has received a £23.9m Town Deal from the Government’s Towns Fund to support a range of projects that aim to revitalise Castleford, attracting new businesses and employment opportunities - creating training opportunities and high-quality environments for residents and visitors to enjoy.

One of these projects involves transforming Sagar Street into a revitalised link between the town centre and the river.

Sagar Street has played host to an eclectic selection of retailers over the years, offering visitors a traditional slice of Yorkshire life. The Council is fully committed to enhancing the uniqueness of this street, and this project will see improvements made to shop fronts - providing an authentic, more traditional, town centre experience.

To ensure the quality of the buildings on Sagar Street match the Council’s ambitious plans for Castleford, a shop improvement grant scheme has been set up and there are plans to enhance the street’s green spaces, install seating, and improve lighting.

You will also find Kingdom Hall, the oldest building in Castleford, on Sagar Street. The Sagar Street project will help to secure the future of this historic property by bringing it back into use.

By investing in Sagar Street, the Council aims to create a direct route between Henry Moore Square and the riverside, encouraging more people to experience and enjoy both of these town centre destinations.
