Making Homes Across The District Mega Solar!

27 September 2023

The Wakefield Mega Solar project involved installing 115 solar PV systems between October 2021 and September 2022 at various homes across the district. The project aimed to improve the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) score for houses with poor energy efficiency occupied by low-income households. Since then, the National Energy Action (NEA) has conducted an evaluation of the project using feedback provided by a sample of homes included in the project, to assess the effectiveness of solar power generation and household consumption using a hybrid inverter.

The study assessed how satisfied participants were with the installation of equipment and looked at how household behaviour changed because of the project. It also studied the performance of the solar PV systems, the level of self-consumption of solar energy generated, and estimated the total amount households saved due to using solar energy at home.

All recipients sampled saw the energy efficiency (EPC) standard of their homes improve, which will help them to save energy.

Most of the recipients sampled have had higher that typical electricity generation return from their solar panels and up to £668/per annum.

Recipients were extremely satisfied with the installation work and the systems installed.

The findings not only provide fascinating insight into the project but may also be of interest to anyone considering the use of solar power at home.
