Castleford, Pontefract and Normanton Market improvements

20 November 2023

Wakefield Council is investing over £6.47m into improving the district’s Markets via a series of transformational projects.

With work well underway, the Council is committed to providing shoppers and traders with a bigger, brighter shopping experience.

Improvement work carried out at Normanton Market completed back in March, and already the investment is delivering great results – all units are now full, with the latest trader opening just this month.

Castleford Market continues its transformational journey.  Six months into the ambitious project, work has now reached the halfway point. All work is expected to be complete in the Spring. Meanwhile, the market remains open to the public and traders are already seeing an increase in footfall as the festive shopping season approaches.

Pontefract Market is open as usual and all improvement work is due to finish by the first week of December - in time for Christmas shoppers and a host of seasonal celebrations.

Visitors to Wakefield Market will have noticed it has a fresh new look. A new visual identity has been created to modernise the look and feel of the districts six markets. This month Wakefield Market revealed the new designs, which incorporate feedback and suggestions put forward by market traders, local retailers, and other key stakeholders. Find out more about the new look for our markets and be sure to check out the fantastic variety of stalls next time you’re in the city.

With so many great family activities happening at the markets this December, it will indeed be the most wonderful time of the year!
