The Blue Light Fund: Making use of unspent levy to fund apprenticeships for the emergency services.

27 November 2023

The Blue Light Fund is a Wakefield Council initiative, created by Employer Engagement Manager Kevin O’Reilly, which aims to take unspent apprenticeship levy and use it to fund apprenticeships at the most needed and respected services in the UK. Eventually, this will lead to the emergency services helping each other by redistributing the unspent levy to where it is required most.

The scheme is in its early stages, but many organisations have already registered their interest, including NHS England, Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, West Yorkshire Police, Humberside Police, West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, and this is growing!.

It’s an exciting time as the initiative continues to gain momentum, and more groups find out about the idea. Kevin currently is looking to engage with employers about their unspent levy.
