A win for Pontefract Market in the Design Awards.

16 February 2024

Businesses in Pontefract have been recognised for their contributions to regeneration projects that have helped improve the town and enhance its historic streets. The Pontefract Civic Society hosted the Design Awards shining a spotlight on regeneration projects that have restored the historic streetscape and open spaces of Pontefract, creating places for residents and visitors to shop, relax, and enjoy.

The awards included a civic/commercial category and recognised the work carried out by Wakefield Council to improve Pontefract Market, following an investment totalling £1.136 million.

The awards are issued based on various assessments carried out by the Civic Society, starting with planning applications, followed by town inspections that monitor and check the changes taking place, then suitable nominees are visited to discuss the work with owners – it’s a year-long project for the Civic Society.

Last year Pontefract Market attracted a million visitors and was just one of the districts markets to benefit from an investment of almost £6.5 million to improve the district’s markets.
